CONTRACT: Experienced Full Stack Engineer

United States Contract Allows remote

Zeal is a web and mobile development consultancy that empowers small- to medium-sized organizations to solve huge problems.

Headquartered in the heart of downtown Medford, OR -- the center-point between the global technology hubs of Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California. We also have offices in Portsmouth, NH and San Diego, CA.

Join our network of zealous contractors helping to craft solutions that generate massive business value for our clients and their customers.

Why this role is important:

Culture: We promote an open and collaborative approach to decision-making process. We are pragmatically agile — encourage pair programming and multi-discipline collaboration — and flexible, with an evolutionary view of the product life cycle.

Values: We “sell” an experience. Empathy, enthusiasm (not to be confused with being an extrovert), artisanship and appreciation towards one another, are our most valued attributes. We want you to bring a deep passion and excitement for the engineering art form.

Process: We practice the finer points of eXtreme Programming: a highly collaborative development process. We strive to maintaining small project team and tight cycles of feedback, and remove as many operational barriers as possible, so you can build the right product, the right way. We practice multi-discipline pair programming, which means we not only pair up engineers, but also designers.

Some valuable skills we are looking for:

  • Communication over documentation;
  • Communicate highly-technical concepts to non-technical people;
  • Crafting amazing web and mobile applications using Ruby on Rails, Javascript and React.js;
  • Test Driven Development and Pair Programming;
  • Story lifecycle, breaking down projects into bite size chunks that anyone on the team can deliver;
  • Object oriented development patterns and relational databases, such as PostgreSQL or MySQL;
  • Functional programming, such as Elixir/Phoenix and Ramda.js;
  • Git version control: committing, branching, merging and rebasing;
  • Implementation of a graphic design in HTML and SCSS;
  • DevOps, using Amazon Web Services and Heroku;

What you can expect as a zealous contractor:

  • Multi-month contracts;
  • Focus on pair programming;
  • 32-40 hours per week consistently;
  • Working with clients to ensure time-zone alignment;
  • Very competitive rates;

If this sounds amazing, please apply!

We apologize in advance that we are not able to accept international contractors outside of the United States, Canada or Mexico.

Independent Contractor Status

A subcontractoring position does not come with any employee-like benefits, such as required equipment, travel, health insurance, disability or paid-time-off (PTO).  Subcontracting is not a replacement for full-time employment. Taxes, insurance, business registration, etc... would be the responsibility of your business.

Your work arrangement would be project-based between you and Zeal, and not between you and the client.

The upside is flexibility with what projects you chose to take, a consistent weekly rate, and, on average, a project of many months.
