CONTRACT: Experienced Javascript Engineer (West Coast)

Zeal is a web and mobile development consultancy that empowers small- to medium-sized organizations to solve their most valuable problems.

Headquartered in the heart of Southern Oregon -- the center-point between the global technology hubs of Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California. We have folks distributed across the country and welcome remote teammates.

Things we care about:

Culture: We promote an open and collaborative approach to decision-making process. We are pragmatically agile — encourage pair programming and multi-discipline collaboration — and flexible, with an evolutionary view of the product life cycle.

Values: We “sell” an experience. Empathy, enthusiasm (not to be confused with being an extrovert), artisanship and appreciation towards one another, are our most valued attributes. We want you to bring a deep passion and excitement for the engineering art form. We embrace the label "consultant" and do our best to offer our clients solutions to their most valuable problems.

Process: We practice the finer points of eXtreme Programming: a highly collaborative development process. We strive to maintain small project teams and tight cycles of feedback, and remove as many operational barriers as possible, so you can build the right product, the right way. We practice multi-discipline pair programming, which means we not only pair up engineers, but also designers. We'll often pair with engineers from our client teams.

Some valuable skills we are looking for:

  • Professional experience in full stack engineering of amazing web and mobile experiences using Node and React
  • Communication over documentation
  • Communicate highly-technical concepts to non-technical people
  • Test Driven Development and Pair Programming
  • Story lifecycle, breaking down projects into bite size chunks that anyone on the team can deliver
  • Confidence in developing software with a functional approach
  • Experience with NoSQL databases
  • Experience with GraphQL
  • Git version control: committing, branching, merging and rebasing
  • Implementation of a graphic design in HTML and SCSS

Nice to have:

  • Experience in full stack development with Ruby on Rails and other JS front-ends.
  • Experience delivering React Native solutions
  • UI/UX design ability
  • Dev-Ops and experience with any cloud platform

What you can expect as a Zeal contractor:

  • Multi-month contracts;
  • Focus on pair programming;
  • 36 billable hours per week consistently;
  • Working with clients to ensure time-zone alignment;
  • Very competitive rates;

Although this is a contractor position, you will be fully integrated with the Zeal team and will participate in the complete team experience. Our work style is highly collaborative. We recognize that it doesn't work for everyone. If you know you are not comfortable with frequent pairing and more communication over less, we might not be the best fit, and that's okay.

If this sounds amazing, please apply!

Note: We are currently taking applications for positions we anticipate in the 1st quarter of 2020.

We apologize in advance that we currently are not able to accept international contractors not residing in the United States.
